Doubting castle 3: Flipped lecture on basic audio editing

Experimentation into basic audio editing techniques and software to support the social media strategy occurred for the digital story task assessment for CWMP. Rather than conducting video interviews, the approach taken by the team involved interviews recorded on iPhone’s using the voice-memo app. As a result, the team has created a large amount of content. There is the possibility to edit these interviews and then post short excerpts as Tweets or possibly hosting these on sound cloud. Another option may be to turn this content into a series of podcasts. The main issues preventing this process is the constraint of time and meeting the requirements of the assignment. Some basic audio editing skills are required to complete these assessments.

The basic audio lecture explores using Audacity, a free multi-track audio editing tool, which can be used across computer operating systems Windows and Mac. The software is relatively straight forward to use and has q user friendly editing capability. This includes “using a selection Tool that allows clicking at various points, selecting Edit > Clip Boundaries > Split – a split line appears” (maual.audacityteam, 2016). This functionality is similar to editing using Adobe’s Final Cut Pro and Apple’s GarageBand.

As a Mac user, GarageBand is part of the software installed on the operating system. This can be combined with Abelton Live software, which also contains editing tools that integrates with GarageBand.

The first GarageBand lecture in the series explore the interface in detail, providing insights such as armed tracks, multitrack’s, panning and ducking (automatic audio adjustment). And completes with a basic song creating using the ‘Magic GarageBand’ project contained with the program.

Not playing by other people’s rules, requires looking outside of the box and creating media that expresses a unique point of view. Creating some short, interesting audio tracks that mix different elements of the media for this assignment will attempt to do this. Further research has identified a “guide how to use multiple features of GarageBand in order to specifically create a mega-mix of favorite songs” (Jcooke5, 2016”). This how to guide is helpful in providing insights into audio editing combining MP3’s and audio tracks. “This “how to” describes the detailed process of editing, merging and looping, etc” (Jcooke5, 2016”).

Simplicity is the key with the audio. GarageBand is a suitable tool to use for edit short audio tracks within the social media strategy of the digital story assignment.
